Open and accessible research data is necessary for other researchers to attempt to recreate, reproduce and validate study findings. Without having access to the details underpinning a study and the underlying data, including code and all relevant metadata, inhibits reproducibility and scientific advance. Switching to a research culture based on a new open research norm is therefore a priority for research institutions and all stakeholders in the research ecosystem. The levels of research data availability in the life sciences at the University of Bristol is poor and varied. With the long-term goal of improving the level of data availability we will assess the reasons and perceived barriers to making research data available within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Bristol
