We interviewed 14 researchers using the interview outline. While most are based in Europe, we also reached researchers in Africa, Asia, and North America. More than half of those interviewed were women, and they represent disciplines across the social and natural sciences, engineering, and statistics. Several work outside of academia, including government agencies, private companies, or non-profit organisations.
One limitation of our data collection was a lack of specific ways to achieve representation across diverse demographics, and should be improved upon for future work.
In order to protect participants’ anonymity, the interview transcripts are not openly available for now but anonymised versions are available on request.
This work was carried out with ethical approval code 12335 from the University of Bristol School of Psychological Science Research Ethics Committee.
We thank the 14 researchers across the world for giving their time for the online interviews, including those who were willing to be named here (in alphabetical order of first name): Alison Parker, Brianna Johns, Johanna Cohoon, Marshall John Styczinski, and Merc Fox (Executive Director, Center of Excellence in Data for Society, University of Arizona, United States).
